This gluten free french toast is the ultimate family favorite breakfast! Made with my homemade gluten free bread for a delicious and sweet breakfast that is ready in under 30 minutes.

I’ve been wanting to make a gluten free french toast recipe for a while now, but I first had to perfect my gluten free bread recipe to make it worthwhile! Well I finally did it and now I have the perfect french toast recipe that I love having for Christmas morning or just a slow Sunday at home.

It’s made with simple, pantry staple ingredients and even works best with stale bread! It takes about 10-15 minutes of prep time and then about 15 minutes of cook time and can be served in a variety of ways.

If you want to mix things up, you can slice the bread into sticks before dipping in the egg mixture, then cook that way so you get french toast sticks! Then dip in maple syrup to serve. If you love this recipe, try my gluten free scones next.

Before we get started…

  • I used my homemade gluten free bread here which I recommend! You can slice it super thick which makes for the perfect french toast. If you don’t want to make homemade bread, I like the brand Greenlite. They sell a gluten free loaf that isn’t pre-sliced so you can make it thick!
  • You can use any kind of milk here – either dairy or a dairy free like soy, almond etc. Then just use a dairy free butter and the whole recipe is dairy free!
  • Feel free to decrease the brown sugar in the egg mixture since you’ll probably add maple syrup to sweeten anyway. It adds some depth of flavor but you can decrease to just 1-2 tablespoons.

How to make gluten free french toast

In a shallow bowl or baking dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and salt.

Heat a large skillet over medium heat and melt the butter.

Once melted, dip about 2 slices of bread into the egg mixture and coat well on each side. I like to let it sit for about 45 seconds so it really soaks things up. You can do longer or shorter but a longer soak will mean a slightly longer cooking time.

Add to your heated pan and let fry on each side until browned, about 1-2 minutes.

Place on a wire rack while you repeat with the rest of the bread. This will prevent it from getting soggy. You can also preheat the oven to about 200 degrees and let it rest in there so it stays warm.

Serve with fresh fruit like berries or banana, maple syrup, chocolate chips, butter – whatever you like! Enjoy!

Serving suggestions

Berries. I love keeping it fruity with some fresh berries like strawberries, a bit of butter and maple syrup. You can also make a fresh berry compote by simmer berries with a bit of sugar and cornstarch until thick, then pouring on top.

Banana Chocolate Chip. Slice up some fresh bananas and sprinkle on chocolate chips while the french toast is still hot so they melt right on top. So good!

Maple cinnamon. Keeping it simple with some maple syrup and an extra sprinkle of maple syrup on top never fails! A little powdered sugar dusted on top is always delicious and pretty.

How to store

This gluten free french toast stores really well so it’s great to prep ahead of time! Just cook as usual, let cool on the wire rack, then transfer to the fridge for up to 3 days. You can reheat it right on the pan with a bit of butter, or stick in the oven at 300 until warm through the center.

To freeze, let cool completely, then transfer to a freezer safe bag and freeze for up to 2 months. I often just reheat it in the toaster, but the stove or oven will also work.

Pro tips

French toast works best with bread that is almost a bit dry and stale. If you’re using fresh bread, you can just let it sit on the counter (already sliced) for about 30 minutes to help it dry out a bit before cooking.

You may need to add a touch more butter to the pan in between cooking the slices. If you notice anything sticking, just melt in an extra tablespoon of butter.
